No Chemical Propellants

The last few weeks have mostly had to do with the Felnian setting, and what to expect from it. The last week I have been splitting time between working more on that, doing revisions/formatting on chapters 4 and 5, and the illustration for chapter 4. However, let's talk about Felnian equipment. We talked about what to expect from each of the races and the Felnian setting. Today I want to give some information on what the Felnian equipment looks like. First of all, Felnian technological development did not mirror ours past the early medieval. They developed bows, swords, etc, but never developed any sort of chemical propellants. This means no gasoline, no rocket fuel, and no cannons or guns. Instead, Felnian technology developed through a Steampunk phase into manipulation of electricity and EM fields. This means that all of their combat technologies are based primarily on swords and close martial combat, with fairly limited use of ranged weapons. However, weapons have evolved somewhat. Bows have changed from simple string based launch systems to using a magnetic field to launch a much smaller dart, and swords, while still relying primarily on the cutting edge, are frequently charged with electricity as well. Due to the similarity of weaponry to medieval, armor is also still based upon classical medieval designs, though the materials are significan upgrades, employing advanced alloys, and they also have armor designed to repulse both standard and advanced weapons. Another difference is that Felnians, being highly athletic and agile feline beings, never developed a system for mounted combat, relying instead on armored soldiers and, as technology advanced, mechs. They do have ships, however, and their ability to manipulate EM fields provides both air and space travel. They discovered "currents" in space that also have allowed them to explore and colonize a few planets, though FTL travel does still take around 1 week/light year and messages are limited to the same speed of travel.
